Patriot and his Reaper fell for Mimi the moment she fell out of the back of the Russian’s SUV. She nearly died, but that didn’t stop Patriot from caring about her. In fact, Mimi’s sister Nylah and Patriot were probably the two souls who cared more about Mimi than anyone else in her life. Patriot was kind and gentle when she needed it. He was always there, and wrapped her in his comforting arms when she was scared. She knew that she could count on him, even when she tried to push him away. Something about Patriot drew her back to life and the living. And the best part was that Mimi was not afraid to face his Reaper, or his passion when it was fully unveiled before her.
This book will break your heart. It is not meant for the weak in spirit, or for those who are not brave enough to face the darkness that happens with drug addiction, sexual assault, and Human trafficking. That Mimi escaped twice with her life is a miraculous thing. She definitely had someone looking out for her on the other side of the spirit realm. Her struggle in the aftermath is breaking, and the betrayal that she deals with at the climax of the book is enough to make you scream. She worked so hard with Patriot to overcome her demons… and then this happens! Life is so unfair.
Mimi is a strong fighter, though. She is tough as nails, but gentle in spirit. She may not make many friends in this book, but the reader can see the character that is within her start to peek through when she begins to talk about her past in the captivity of the Russians and the brutality that they all withstood together. She is a survivor, and she is a protector.
It should not come as any surprise that this book, like nearly all books within the Royal Bastards MC series, are of a dark and mature nature. This particular Chapter of the RBMC, however, is a bit darker than most, even though they are dealing with the same subjects as the Bllack Market Rail Road selling unwilling women and children through the Russian network. With the death of Rancid, and the return of Jameson as the President of the RBMC, their MC may have cleaned up their practices some what, but they are still an outlaw MC, and as such they don’t do things in a manner that seems normal outside the club. Therefore, the themes and topics are darker in nature and more cruel than would be normally seen — even in a Dark Romance. This chapter of the RBMC is a bit darker than most because of it’s proximity to Las Vegas, Nevada, and it’s parnormal/horror themes with the Reapers. The reader should definatly pay close attention to the author’s Trigger Warnings before reading this book.
As far as a Romance goes, this book is a bit on the tame side. Patriot falls head over heels for the main female character, Mimi, before the book even starts (as part of this book is a continuation of a previous book Riding for Hell by the same author). Mimi gradually opens up her heart to the idea of loving a man, despite the horrors that she has lived through in the past. They are rather sweet togther once Mimi realizes that she can love Patroit and that he will not hurt her like she expects of everyone else.
The Spice is there, but due to the nature of Mimi’s past, is again on the tamer side. I would probably set the spice at 3 of 5 stars. Don’t get me wrong, the heat is there, and they do dance between the sheets, but it’s not as untamed as some of the other couples happy times are in the series. It doesn’t disappoint despite being less than a 4 star.
The Tonopah Chapter of the RBMC series deals with Paranormal and Horror elements. The main characters in this MC chapter are Reapers who reap the souls of the wicked and send them to Hell to be feasted upon by Lucifer. Patriot and the others are not afraid to do their job with gleeful abandon, especially if it causes their enemies as much pain as possible. They are also not shy on the use of torture to cause their enemies to endure as much suffering and trauma as they can. So this particular book is a three on the Horror scale.
I loved reading Mimi and Patriot’s story. I was moved by Patriot’s struggles with PTSD and with his determination that Mimi heal with as much help as he could give her. He was determined not to give up on her because he loved her more than she could grasp ahold of in her pain and self loathing. But for Patriot, Mimi would have relapsed or worse. Their story is heartbreaking, but moving, and the Nikki Landis did an outstanding job of translating this emotional epic into a short and sweet novel. For that reason alone it deserves a place in my favorite shelf for eternity.
Be watching out for those handsome devils on your reading adverntures,
Dia
