Halloween Reading Challenge #5: Devil's Ride by Nikki Landis

Ambushed and nearly dead, Dex watched the man he loved as a second father die in the desert. He was a Royal Bastard, and proud to admit he loved his club brothers like a family. It burned within him like a fire to think that the Bloody Scorpions were going to get away with killing his president and brothers. His blood cried out for vengeance, and the devil answered with a deal Dex could’t refuse. The first Devil’s Ride is Grim’s story interwoven with that of the love of his life, Tricia, his ol’ lady. Their love story isn’t pretty. It’s not sweethearts and roses. Grim is’t a good guy, he’s a Reaper, and Tricia is a woman who is fed up with alpha men who can’t seem to hold their women close.

This is not an easy tale to read. It is full of dark thoughts and actions, and deeds that will make some readers  uncomfortable. The book is about a no nonsense outlaw biker club and their rivals, who also don’t abide by the law. Things happen in this book that are grizzly and defy the norm, but in the MC romance genre are pretty down right basic. Also, this particular series with in the RBMC series itself deals with a more horrific type of paranormal being, the Reapers themselves.  I would place this as a 4 out of 5 in the dark romance scale, and a 3.5 on the horror side due to some of the descriptions of both the Reapers and the actions of the Bloody Scorpions and their allies.

Tricia and Grim don’t hold back in the physical department, but the Spice between them isn’t spectacular or anything that is off the charts. He’s into her, and she’s into him even though she doesn’t want to admit it for a long time. You are probably going to bawl your eyes out a bit, so be prepared.

The side characters bring a realism that bonds this group into a real family attitude. The jokes and ribbing seemingly smooth, like it would be for a group that has known eachother for a long time, and has learned to trust eachother. Even Papa becomes a favorite, and the reader wants to know why they dubbed Toad with such a cruel sounding name. Shadow’s pain in this book is visceral, and sharp. You know that there is far more to the story, but the author has chosen to let Shadow tell his own story.

On the whole, this book is enjoyable for a third and fourth read, so don’t get too frustrated with the hot and cold relationship between Grim and Tricia. It all works out in the end with bells and whistles and a bit of magic that only the Reaper can provide. I fell in love with Grim during The Biker’s Gift (the first book in the Tonopah Chapter of the RBMC series by the same author). He just had to learn to let the Reaper out a bit more instead of caging him in too tightly.

Do you dare take a ride with a Reaper on the Devil’s Ride?
